In a recent article in Farmers Weekly, Dr Joanna Urbaniec of the Livestock and One Health Department at Liverpool University, gave advice on the disinfection of livestock trailers, highlighting the importance of cleaning and disinfection to avoid the spread of pathogens among properties and even into the food chain. Her study showed that, given that a typically dirty livestock trailer would contain millions of colony-forming units (cfu) of E coli, bacteria numbers were drastically reduced after cleaning and disinfection.
Joanna reported: “After cleaning, we found 100cfu in an area 10x5cm on the side of the trailer; after disinfecting with FAM 30 [multipurpose agricultural disinfectant], the majority of swabs had zero cfu.”
